OpenAI hit back at Elon Musk on Tuesday in a blog post published on its site in response to a lawsuit filed by one of its co-founders and former backers.
Last week, Musk filed a lawsuit in San Francisco against the company, CEO Sam Altman, and President Greg Brockman, alleging that the company has strayed from its mission to build responsible AI. In a post, OpenAI said it slammed Musk for his failed attempt to make the company part of Tesla.
“It’s unfortunate that this has happened to someone we deeply respected,” OpenAI wrote. Even without him, we were able to make meaningful progress toward OpenAI’s mission. ”
The billionaire Tesla CEO, who co-founded OpenAI and is no longer involved with the company, said in the lawsuit that the company’s close relationship with Microsoft Corp. They argue that it undermined the company’s original mission of developing open source technology.
“To this day, OpenAI Inc.’s website continues to proclaim that its charter is to ensure that AGI ‘benefits all humanity,'” the complaint states. “But in reality, OpenAI Inc. has turned into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of Microsoft, the world’s largest technology company.”
AGI (artificial general intelligence) refers to a type of AI that does not yet exist, but could theoretically perform a variety of tasks better than humans.
Musk is suing, alleging breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and unfair business practices. He filed a lawsuit in 2019 as a donor to the nonprofit parent organization, seeking to force San Francisco-based OpenAI to stop making profits to Microsoft and Altman personally.
OpenAI did not publicly comment on Musk’s lawsuit when it was first filed on February 29, but in an internal memo seen by Bloomberg the company said it “categorically disagrees” with the lawsuit. ” he said.
