How to make money with blogging in 2024
First, watch this video where founder Ramit Sethi explains how to monetize your blog and make millions of dollars.
Below we will explain in more detail the systems you can use to monetize your blog.
Warning: None of these options are “easy.” Each requires its own work and research. But if you’re willing to put in the time and energy, you can find the right system and make it work.
Advertising and sponsorship
This is probably the method of making money with blogging that you are most familiar with. These are like banner ads that appear in the header or sidebar of a website.
These ads come in several different formats.
- Pay per action. Advertisers pay website owners each time a user completes an action that they have previously agreed to (such as signing up for a newsletter).
- Pay per click. Every time a user clicks on an ad, the advertiser pays her website owner (this is the most common).
- Pay per impression. The advertiser pays the owner of her website each time a reader views an ad.
A great way to start advertising to monetize your blog is with Google AdSense. This is Google’s way of connecting advertisers and websites to place ads on your pages.
Another similar way to make money through blogging is through sponsorships.
These are typically branded content sponsored by third-party companies.
For example, imagine you have a blog about photography. Camera company Nikon may sponsor a blog post reviewing his latest DSLR camera.
This is also a surefire way to make money with a blog, but the barrier to entry is much higher as you need thousands of readers per month and spend time contacting sponsors.
Still, if you have the time and resources, it’s worth a try.
affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing works by sharing links for products. Every time someone buys the item, you receive a portion of the revenue.
For example, a blog about mobile phones might have an affiliate partnership with Samsung. There may be affiliate links on various mobile phone and accessory blogs. The blogger receives money if one of the readers buys a mobile phone from Samsung via the link.
The problem is, not only do you need a lot of readers who visit your blog frequently, but they also need to be the type of readers who are willing to buy the product you’re marketing. It’s a difficult combination to put together.
Additionally, readers may be offended by the fact that you are providing an affiliate link, even if you clearly indicate that it is an affiliate link.
If you’re still interested, Amazon Associates is a great place to start. They have one of the biggest affiliate marketing programs out there.
E-book
Selling digital products such as e-books is a great way to make money from your blog.
It helps you generate passive income while spreading the word about your blog and brand.
It also doesn’t have to be a crazy, multi-volume book comparable to Ulysses. Ebooks can be as short as 25 to 50 pages.
The important thing is to give something to the reader tons of value In e-book.
Also, if you’ve been running a blog for a while, chances are you already have all the materials you need to create one. Take that content and repurpose it into an e-book.
app
Apps and software are also digital products that you can sell on your blog.
For example, let’s say you have a blog about hunting. Your readers might love your app, which highlights all of the best public and private lands in the area available for hunting.
However, unlike e-books, the barrier to entry is a bit higher.
After all, you need to be able to build the app yourself or find someone to develop it for you.
However, if you create something that people love, your efforts can turn out to be a great success.
Membership and subscription
This is a great option if you have a loyal community of readers. They’re probably following you because you’re an expert in your field and can provide incredibly valuable advice.
In that case, they may be willing to pay a monthly fee to get high quality, premium content.
That’s the core of membership blogs and subscription blogs. We offer our readers access to great content for a fixed monthly fee. They subscribe and you keep returning great content to them.
If you have a strong community and great content, you can create a very popular membership site like Jon Morrow’s Serious Bloggers Only. On his site, he provides his readers with the tools and connections they need to grow and thrive in the industry, his community of like-minded copywriters.
