Carter Osborn is a “College Admissions Essay Consultant” who makes $225 an hour and over $100,000 a year 💰
According to a recent interview, the business had humble beginnings…
In Carter’s first year, he acquired three clients and made several thousand dollars.
The following year, he tripled his clientele to 14 students and his sales topped five digits. Since then, Carter has worked with about 25-30 students to reach his $100,000+ goal.
This was more than I earned from my full-time corporate PR job. This was the turning point that led to Carter’s retirement and full-time focus on his college essay consulting business.
📅 Looks like he started in 2017 (when the domain was registered).
As a side job in graduate school, Carter began teaching a variety of subjects, from SAT/ACT preparation to history and even pre-calculus.
But it was the practical writing and language arts aspects that he enjoyed most, especially helping students compose their college admissions essays.
So he focused on essay writing consulting and found there was little competition in his area (Seattle) 🗺️
Pricing…
When he started his essay coaching service, he was underpaid at $75 an hour…
However, Carter soon realized that potential customers were skeptical about such low prices for professional services. He eventually raised his rate to a more reasonable $225 per hour.
Carter has no social media presence 🤯 This, combined with his high hourly wage, may actually be contributing to his success…
This industry is so strange that people almost look at it like a luxury item. It’s like a top consultant, a top tutor. This person is special. This person is very good and he does not need to promote himself, so he is almost a difficult person to find.
His income is seasonal, with most of it occurring within a few months.
His year followed a pattern of intense work followed by months of much-needed downtime.
However, in late summer and early autumn, the situation is completely opposite. Carter has to keep his head down and try.
🤝 Carter also teamed up with potential competitors…
He reached out to established and successful college admissions consultants and counselors in his area. His proposal was simple. “Can you help me? If you have clients who are overflowing and cannot be reached, please come through my path.”
And it was a win-win partnership. If you think about it, these consultants were already fully booked anyway, and writing essays was often not how they wanted to spend their time.
From there, the word-of-mouth referral engine started running.
📈 His plans to expand his business…
I currently do professional coaching and consulting with students, tutors, and even those who want to become college essay specialists. I’m working with them to talk about how to do that.
Why not try becoming a tutor too?
Do you know a theme well enough to want to try it? 🤔
As Carter’s story shows, you can earn quite a bit of money this way over time.
